Mr. Moto’s Legacies
In 1853, President Fillmore commissioned the crew of the USS Susquehanna to embark on a yearlong journey to the East. Their mission was to reach the shores of Japan and open the country to American trade.
Mr. Moto, a gourmand and art connoisseur, traveled alongside the crew of the USS Susquehanna. Throughout Mr. Moto’s voyage, he documented his most profound discoveries, including the treasure of Japanese gastronomy.
Historians have recorded the USS Susquehanna’s journey in great detail, but until now the intimate stories of the crew and passengers have been long forgotten. The recent discovery of Mr. Moto’s long closed office and private collection has enabled the public to experience the treasures discovered by Mr. Moto in the land of the rising sun.
